Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a helpful ripple pushed from the W with a firming glass. Expect most activity at Goat Lake around sheltered bays and points. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for Goat Lake in the Idaho County part of Idaho. Everything around it is mixed forest. The far bank is a conversation away, so keep low and quiet. Our Idaho County list holds plenty of bigger water. Hamilton is the closest town at 45 miles. Kamiah lies 52 miles off, Grangeville another 54 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Fish documented in Idaho County include rainbow trout, Chinook salmon, cutthroat trout and bull trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Goat Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Long-run averages give July about 54°F and December about 19°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Goat Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. For a change of water, Square Rock Lake is 1.5 miles distant. Treat access at Goat Lake as something to verify.
