A grey, even sky over the water, with a busy SW wind on the open water and pressure on the rise. Most of the action on Cooks Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

The Boundary County end of Idaho holds Cooks Lake. The country round it is lake country bush from end to end. Small at around 7 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. The closest town, Bonners Ferry, is 12 miles distant. The nearest city of size is Spokane, 81 miles away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Open biodiversity records for Boundary County list rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and brook trout. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. Cooks Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
August runs about 56°F on average, January about 19°F. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Cooks Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
No access rule appears in what we hold. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Brooks Lake sits 1.2 miles off and takes the overflow. For Cooks Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
