A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a gentle ripple from the ENE with the glass slipping lower. On Stonecypher Lake, work shallow cover and weed edges first. The useful hours run night into morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Stonecypher Lake in the Stephens County part of Georgia. Height above sea level is 797 feet. It measures about 34 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 1.3 miles in total. Few waters listed in Stephens County are bigger. You are 3.9 miles from Toccoa. Athens sits 39 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Rules can differ a short way off, since the county line is near.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Records collected within a few miles name green sunfish, redbreast sunfish and bluehead chub. Records come from public data, not from a stocking programme. On Stonecypher Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-term averages put July at about 78°F and January near 41°F. The surface stays open the year round. October and November give a second good stretch as it cools. Late winter often fishes better here than midsummer does. Stonecypher Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. For the panfish, a small hook, a float and a piece of worm outfish everything fancy. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. McMurry Lake, 1.9 miles away, makes the obvious fallback.
