A crisp, open sky after dark, with dead-still conditions and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Payne Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Payne Lake is one of the Madison County waters in Georgia. The surface lies 712 feet up. Surface area runs to about 12 acres — small enough to read in one session. Head to Comer, 1.2 miles away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Winterville at 11 miles and Franklin Springs at 14 miles. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Records collected within a few miles name rosyface chub. Local agencies keep the authoritative list for each water. On Payne Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Expect July near 79°F and January near 42°F on the long-run figures. Cooler months are the productive ones on most of this water. March through May is the strongest run, with autumn a second stretch. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. Payne Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. If the gate is shut, Reservoir 64 at 1.3 miles is the nearest alternative. Rules at Payne Lake are worth checking on the day.
