Steady rain over the water today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NNE as pressure builds. Sumner Lake should fish best around the first drop-off and weed lines today. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Lake County end of Florida holds Sumner Lake. It sits at 85 feet above sea level. Surface area runs to roughly 339 acres, so plan for one area rather than the whole. On our Lake County list it sits near the top for size. Groveland lies 2.1 miles from the water. The big place round here is Orlando, 27 miles distant. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records collected within a few miles name bluegill, largemouth bass, redear sunfish, warmouth and black crappie. Reporting is uneven, so absence from the list means little. At Sumner Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Long-run averages give July about 82°F and January about 59°F. Winter is simply the pleasant end of an unbroken season. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. The season on Sumner Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. The closest car park is half a mile away, so pack accordingly. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Lake Douglas, 0.9 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Sumner Lake are worth checking on the day.
