A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with light air out of the NNW with the barometer flat. Start the search at Speck Pond along the quiet corner out of the wind. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Out in Walton County, Florida, sits Speck Pond. It sits at 164 feet above sea level. Small at around 9 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Walton County. For supplies, Crestview is 12 miles out. Then Niceville, 14 miles, and Valparaiso, 15 miles. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Public wildlife records from this area list blackbanded darter, speckled madtom and spotted sunfish. Records show what people reported, not what is stocked. Anyone new to Speck Pond should walk it once before setting up.
Climate normals give 81°F for July and 49°F for January. There is no dead season here at all. Shade and hour of day matter more than month. The hot months push the fishing to dawn and dusk. Anyone fishing Speck Pond regularly works to that calendar. Water colour tells you more than the air temperature does.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. There is a campsite half a mile from the water. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Indigo Pond at 3.5 miles is the nearest alternative. For Speck Pond in particular, ask before you travel.
