Glare on the water under a clear sky, with a light NNW breeze and pressure easing off. Activity on Lake Alto should centre on the weed line and any gaps in it. The day fishes best from the day. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

The Alachua County end of Florida holds Lake Alto. It stands 144 feet above sea level. This is sizeable water at about 554 acres, and a boat opens up most of it. On our Alachua County list it sits near the top for size. For supplies, Waldo is 1.6 miles out. Keystone Heights is 6.8 miles and Starke 12 miles. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Biodiversity records within roughly six miles include bluegill, dollar sunfish and swamp darter. Records show what people reported, so treat the list as a guide to what lives in the area. Fish Lake Alto to its features, not to its size.
The year swings from about 54°F in January to roughly 81°F in July. There is no cold season worth the name. The cooler months are the comfortable ones to be out. The hot months push the fishing to dawn and dusk. Plan any trip to Lake Alto around it. A steady wind fishes better than a still, bright day.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Should this one be busy, Hickory Pond is 1.6 miles off. What applies at Lake Alto may have changed since it was mapped.
