Rules can differ a short way off, since the county line is near.

• Where to Fish on Government Dead Lake

No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records collected within a few miles name blackbanded darter, longear sunfish and saddleback darter. Presence in the area does not guarantee a fish on the day. Take Government Dead Lake a stretch at a time.

• Seasonal Patterns

Expect July near 81°F and January near 49°F on the long-run figures. Every month fishes, though midsummer narrows the useful hours. Shade and hour of day matter more than month. April and May are the settled weeks, with October close behind. That is the shape of the year on Government Dead Lake.

• Tackle & Baits

No access rule appears in what we hold. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. If the gate is shut, Campbells Dead River at 0.6 miles is the nearest alternative. Signs at Government Dead Lake carry more weight than any list.
