West Thompson Lake near Thompson: Fishing Spots, Seasons and Access

• Overview

  Connecticut holds West Thompson Lake, in Northeastern Connecticut Planning Region. Beyond the shoreline you have pine and birch. Roughly 200 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Shoreline comes to about 2.9 miles, small enough to learn in a day. Head to Thompson, 2.1 miles away, for anything you forgot. North Grosvenor Dale is 2.2 miles and Putnam 2.7 miles. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.

• Where to Fish on West Thompson Lake

  Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. County-wide records name bluegill, smallmouth bass and yellow bullhead. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. West Thompson Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.

• Seasonal Patterns

  Climate records put July near 70°F and January near 24°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late March. From about late March to around late December, expect open water on the long-run figures. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to West Thompson Lake.

  Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Boat access is recorded roughly half a mile away. The nearest car park is half a mile from the water.
