A still, cloudless night on the water, with a light N breeze and pressure on the rise. Most of the action on Lake Tavolan should come off bays that hold the day's warmth. The strongest window is the evening. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Lake Tavolan falls in Northwest Hills Planning Region, part of Connecticut. Beyond the shoreline you have mixed forest. With some 26 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Connecticut listings. The nearest town is Canaan, 7.3 miles away. It is 32 miles to Waterbury, the nearest city. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Built water gives depth close in, which suits a bank angler. Open biodiversity records for Northwest Hills Planning Region list bluegill, brown trout and largemouth bass. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The near bank of Lake Tavolan is often the one people ignore.
Average temperature peaks around 70°F in July and bottoms out near 22°F in January. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late March. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late March until roughly mid December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. At Lake Tavolan the season follows that pattern closely.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. The water sits inside or beside a nature reserve, so expect extra rules. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Lorenzo Pond at 0.7 miles is the nearest alternative. For Lake Tavolan, the notice at the access point is the final word.
