Open sky and sharp air tonight, with light air out of the NNE with a firming glass. The productive water at Gravel Pond will be around gaps in the weed within a lob. A long productive spell runs morning through afternoon. A careful, quiet approach will out-fish a busy one. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Gravel Pond is one of the Naugatuck Valley Planning Region waters in Connecticut. Tidal water begins 22 miles from here. This is a pocket water of some 12 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. The nearest place of any size is Heritage Village, 1.2 miles away. Waterbury sits 12 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. A reservoir gives you a hard edge, a shelf, and not much else. Fish documented in Naugatuck Valley Planning Region include bluegill, white sucker, pumpkinseed and yellow perch. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Work Gravel Pond in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about 26°F and July at about 72°F, the water has a wide range to work through. A lid forms in a hard winter only. It is not guaranteed even in a cold spell, so check yourself. Autumn steadies things again once the heat lets go. It holds true on Gravel Pond more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Recorded parking is half a mile off, far enough to travel light. Koons Preserve covers ground next to the water; its rules will apply on that side. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Transylvania Pond, 1.7 miles away. Nothing on Gravel Pond should be assumed from this page alone.
