Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with light air out of the NW and pressure sitting still. Activity on Bird Pond should centre on the closest cover to deeper water. The forecast backs the stretch from morning through afternoon. Ride the conditions while they last. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Naugatuck Valley Planning Region, Connecticut, this is Bird Pond. The surface lies 801 feet up. At roughly 5 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. Nearest town is Bethlehem Village, 0.7 miles off. Waterbury is the closest city, 9.9 miles away. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. Survey and observation records for Naugatuck Valley Planning Region include bluegill, white sucker, pumpkinseed and yellow perch. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. The shape of Bird Pond rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Typical July readings run about 71°F; by January the average is down near 24°F. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late March. Ice clears near late March and comes back about late December in a typical year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Bird Pond.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. You can leave the car about half a mile from the water. Part of this sits inside or beside Muck Swamp, so read the notices. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Long Meadow Pond, 1.4 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. For Bird Pond, the notice at the access point is the final word.
