A grey, even sky over the water, with light air out of the NE with a softening glass. Activity on Wellington Lake should centre on the shallows early and the drop later. The strongest window is the morning. Small adjustments will matter more than big moves. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Wellington Lake falls in Park County, part of Colorado. Lake country bush runs right down to the water. It runs to roughly 175 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 2.5 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Start from Bailey, 8.5 miles down the road. The big place round here is Lakewood, 31 miles distant. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Open biodiversity records for Park County list brown trout, rainbow trout and longnose sucker. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. At Wellington Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Average temperature peaks around 57°F in July and bottoms out near 22°F in January. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Wellington Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. Parking is at Trailhead "The Castle", some half a mile off. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Failing this one, try Crystal Lake, 6.6 miles away. Nothing on Wellington Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
