Bright, clear skies over the water today, with light air out of the NW with pressure dropping. Most of the action on Swamp Lakes should come off the first drop-off and weed lines. The day peaks in the morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Swamp Lakes is a Lake County water, Colorado side. It stands 10,886 feet above sea level. Surface area runs to about 2 acres — small enough to read in one session. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Lake County. Start from Leadville North, 7.6 miles down the road. Lakewood sits 80 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Open biodiversity records for Lake County list rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Swamp Lakes the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The warm month here averages 49°F; the cold one sits at 13°F. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early June. The water is typically free of ice between early June and early November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Swamp Lakes fishes to that pattern most years.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Native Lake sits 1.1 miles off and takes the overflow. Rules at Swamp Lakes are worth checking on the day.
