A wide-open sky and strong sun today, with a light chop building from the ESE and the barometer heading up. Most of the action on Lone Pine Lake should come off the calm side of the wind. Quiet conditions all day, with the night marginally better. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lone Pine Lake lies in Grand County, in Colorado. The surface lies 9,869 feet up. At 13 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. Granby sits 15 miles from here and is the nearest stop. The nearest city of size is Boulder, 29 miles away. Other water nearby: Lake Verna 1.4 miles away, Lake Nanita 1.8 miles, Spirit Lake 2 miles away, Lake Nokoni 2.2 miles and Fourth Lake 2.5 miles away. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Grand County records list black-spotted cutthroat trout, brook trout and rainbow trout among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Read Lone Pine Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Averages here run 51°F at the top of summer and 16°F at the bottom of winter. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late May. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late May and starts locking again about early November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Lone Pine Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Overnight stays are possible half a mile away. Mapping records toilets within half a mile. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Lake Verna sits 1.4 miles off and takes the overflow. Check the current arrangement for Lone Pine Lake.
