A clear night sky over the water, with a gentle ripple from the W and pressure leaking away. The productive water at Doig Lake will be around the first drop-off and weed lines. If you must go, go in the middle of the day. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Doig Lake lies within the bounds of Summit County, Colorado. What surrounds it is mixed forest. At 4 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. On size it sits at the modest end of our Summit County list. Nearest town is Vail, 10 miles off. Minturn is 15 miles away, with Avon at 15 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Summit County include brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout and black-spotted cutthroat trout. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. The near bank of Doig Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate normals give 53°F for July and 17°F for January. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid May. On average, mid May opens the water and early November closes it again. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Doig Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Dora Lake, 0.9 miles out. For Doig Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
