A cloudless sky and strong light today, with a gentle ripple from the NNE with a softening glass. Most of the action on Archuleta Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows.

Colorado holds Archuleta Lake, in Mineral County. The bank is 11,749 feet above sea level. Small at around 8 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. It is high ground by Colorado standards. Pagosa Springs is the closest place, 20 miles off. Then Del Norte, 30 miles, and Monte Vista, 40 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Mineral County records list brook trout, black-spotted cutthroat trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. The shape of Archuleta Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
Climate normals give 51°F for July and 15°F for January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Winter locks it down, and late May brings it back. Average temperatures cross freezing around late May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Expect Archuleta Lake to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Spotted Lake sits 0.7 miles off and takes the overflow. Signs at Archuleta Lake carry more weight than any list.
