No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with a whisper of wind from the SW with a softening glass. On Sportsman Lake, work the weed line and any gaps in it first. A workmanlike forecast: no peak, no collapse. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Sportsman Lake belongs to Fresno County, California. The setting is open valley on every side. It covers about 10 acres, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Auberry is the closest town at 24 miles. The big place round here is Clovis, 40 miles distant. Round about: Hatch Lake out at 0.5 miles, Betty Lake 1.4 miles away, Mud Lakes out at 1.6 miles, Grouse Lake 1.9 miles away and Virginia Lake out at 1.9 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
Depth figures are not published for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fresno County records list brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, green sunfish and Sacramento sucker among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On Sportsman Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Between February at about 26°F and August at about 56°F, the water has a wide range to work through. The freeze here is occasional rather than annual. Some winters give nothing at all, so plan for open water. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. That is the shape of the year on Sportsman Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Failing this one, try Hatch Lake, 0.5 miles away. None of that is settled for Sportsman Lake in what we hold.
