Clear conditions and high sun today, with an easy breeze from the ESE and pressure easing off. On Soda Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Soda Lake falls in San Luis Obispo County, part of California. The land about it is open plain. This is big water, about 3.9 sq miles, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. Around 14 miles of bank, which is a long day on foot. Among the waters listed for San Luis Obispo County, none is wider. Taft Heights lies 24 miles from the water. Then Ford City, 25 miles, and Taft, 25 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
This is salt or soda water, not a conventional fishery: do not expect the usual freshwater species here. The basin is ephemeral: it can stand empty for years between fills. If you are set on fishing this area, look to the rivers and fresh waters nearby instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. At Soda Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
The year swings from about 45°F in December to roughly 76°F in July. The surface stays open the year round. The cooler months are the comfortable ones to be out. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. Plan any trip to Soda Lake around it. Autumn feeding runs harder as the light drops away.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping marks it as seasonal water rather than permanent. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Huasna River is 29 miles off. Where Soda Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
