A bright day with hardly any cloud, with light air out of the ENE with the glass slipping lower. The water to cover at Shell Lake is any hard bottom among the soft. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

In California, Shell Lake belongs to Mono County. Beyond the shoreline you have pine and birch. This is a pocket water of some 4 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Our Mono County list holds plenty of bigger water. Yosemite Valley is the closest place, 22 miles off. Mammoth Lakes lies 26 miles off, Midpines another 45 miles. This one is safely inside the county line.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Mono County cover brook trout, rainbow trout and brown trout. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Fish Shell Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
On the long-term average, August reads 51°F and February reads 20°F. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid June. The water is typically free of ice between mid June and mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Shell Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Recorded parking is half a mile off, far enough to travel light. A campsite is mapped about half a mile away, which makes an early start easier. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Fantail Lake at 0.6 miles is the sensible second choice.
