Hard light and clear air over the water, with dead-still conditions with a firming glass. Whatever swims in Dry Lake should be near shallow cover and weed edges. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Night
Set in Humboldt County, California, this is Dry Lake. The land about it is pine and hardwood. At 2 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. For a base, Willow Creek sits 21 miles out. After that come Westhaven-Moonstone at 25 miles and Blue Lake at 29 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Humboldt County, recorded fish include green sturgeon, flathead grey mullet, rainbow trout and Coho salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Dry Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Between December at about 41°F and August at about 66°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Warm months push fish deep; cool months bring them back. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. Autumn steadies things again once the heat lets go. Anyone fishing Dry Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Parking sits half a mile out, which makes for a walk with tackle. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Blue Lake is 0.7 miles distant. For Dry Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
