A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with light air out of the WSW with the glass holding level. Activity on Dry Lake should centre on the first drop-off and weed lines. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Dry Lake sits in Humboldt County, out in California. It sits 30 miles in from the sea. The whole thing is a single swim; walk it in a minute. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Humboldt County. The nearest place of any size is Hydesville, 21 miles away. After that come Rio Dell at 21 miles and Fortuna at 25 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Across Humboldt County, recorded fish include green sturgeon, flathead grey mullet, rainbow trout, Coho salmon and cutthroat trout. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Anyone new to Dry Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Seasonal averages run from 42°F in December up to 65°F in August. The year never really closes; it just gets uncomfortable in summer. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. November and March are the quiet, comfortable months to be out. Plan around that when you fish Dry Lake.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. Mapped as intermittent, it fills after rain and shrinks between. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Turtle Lake, 0.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Dry Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
