Hard light and clear air over the water, with a faint WNW drift and the barometer heading up. The productive water at Cone Reservoir will be around standing timber and the edges around it. The day runs flat but workable from start to finish. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Cone Reservoir in the Lassen County part of California. Everything around it is mixed woodland. This is a pocket water of some 4 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. On size it sits at the modest end of our Lassen County list. Burney at 17 miles is the nearest place to stop. Beyond it, Chester at 32 miles and Shingletown at 33 miles. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. County-wide records name rainbow trout, tahoe sucker and Sacramento sucker. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Read Cone Reservoir for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Temperature averages peak at 65°F in July and bottom out at 32°F in December. A lid forms in a hard winter only. Cover comes and goes, so treat it with suspicion rather than trust. Spring and autumn carry the year; summer squeezes it into the ends of the day. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Cone Reservoir.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Failing this one, try Porcupine Reservoir, 0.4 miles away. None of that is settled for Cone Reservoir in what we hold.
