A cloudless sky and strong light today, with a useful ESE wind pushing food about and a falling glass. On Castac Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Castac Lake lies in Kern County, in California. Dry hill runs right down to the water. With some 210 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With 3.7 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Lebec lies 1.3 miles from the water. Beyond it, Frazier Park at 5.8 miles and Pine Mountain Club at 17 miles. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name bluegill, common carp, black crappie, green sunfish and channel catfish. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Castac Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Averages move between 43°F in January and 73°F in August. Cold never closes this one. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. Spring and autumn carry the year; summer squeezes it into the ends of the day. Castac Lake fishes to that pattern most years. Sudden cold puts fish down faster than sustained cold does.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Quail Lake is 7 miles off. Where Castac Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
