A still, cloudless night on the water, with light air out of the NW with a firming glass. The productive water at Skate Lake will be around shallow cover and weed edges. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. A raw day: short sessions and precise casts pay.

In Alaska, Skate Lake belongs to Southeast Fairbanks Census Area. It lies 1,696 feet above sea level. With some 56 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With about 1.6 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Our Southeast Fairbanks Census Area list holds plenty of bigger water. Nearest place of any size is Tok, 41 miles away. Beyond it, Dawson City at 108 miles and Deltana at 118 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Open biodiversity records for Southeast Fairbanks Census Area list Arctic grayling, lake whitefish, lake trout and longnose sucker. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Skate Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-run averages give July about 59°F and January about -17°F. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early May. Ice usually gives way near early May, and forms again about mid October. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Skate Lake rarely departs from it.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Should this one be busy, Pauline Lakes is 1.7 miles off. None of that is settled for Skate Lake in what we hold.
