A closed sky with even light today, with flat calm through the day and pressure on the rise. Expect most activity at Sawmill Lake around bays that hold the day's warmth. Bank on the evening and treat the rest as bonus. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Alaska holds Sawmill Lake, in Kodiak Island Borough. The ground round it is open valley. Surface area runs to about 14 acres — small enough to read in one session. It is a small entry by Kodiak Island Borough standards. Head to Kodiak, 13 miles away, for anything you forgot. Anchorage sits 262 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Salt or brackish and tidal: fish the flow, rest at slack, and watch the mud on a falling tide. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Anyone new to Sawmill Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Climate normals give 54°F for August and 32°F for January. In milder years the surface never sets. In a normal year the cover is thin and short-lived. November and March are the quiet, comfortable months to be out. It holds true on Sawmill Lake more years than not. Autumn feeding runs harder as the light drops away.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. The nearest alternative is Neptune, 2.4 miles out. None of that is settled for Sawmill Lake in what we hold.
