Flat light and a covered sky today, with almost no wind to speak of as pressure builds. Activity on Never-Never Lake should centre on bays that hold the day's warmth. Quiet conditions all day, with the evening marginally better. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Never-Never Lake is a Matanuska-Susitna Borough water, in Alaska. Tidal water begins 8.6 miles from here. Roughly 36 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. About 1.8 miles of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. For supplies, Big Lake is 0.6 miles out. Then Houston, 8.9 miles, and Knik-Fairview, 12 miles. No border sits close enough to matter.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Matanuska-Susitna Borough cover rainbow trout, Coho salmon and sockeye salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Never-Never Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Expect July to average close to 59°F, with January the cold end at about 10°F. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. On average, late April opens the water and early November closes it again. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. It holds true on Never-Never Lake more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. The nearest alternative is Sara Lake, 0.8 miles out. Treat Never-Never Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
