Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with hardly a ripple anywhere with a settled glass. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at Deer Lake. A long productive spell runs morning through afternoon. Make the first hour count and build on it. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

The Sitka City and Borough end of Alaska holds Deer Lake. The setting is mixed woodland. It measures some 966 acres, and wind has room to build across it. Some 7.9 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. It ranks high for size among our Sitka City and Borough listings. Sitka lies 44 miles from the water. Anchorage is the closest city, 630 miles away. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Sitka City and Borough: pink salmon, Chum salmon and Coho salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Deer Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
August is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 54°F, while January sits near 31°F. Mild ends to the year keep the season long. It should never be assumed safe, whatever the month says. June to September is hot work, so the first and last hours are what count. The season on Deer Lake rarely departs from it.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Fawn Lake at 1.4 miles is the nearest alternative. What applies at Deer Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
