A grey, even sky over the water, with barely a breath of wind and steady pressure. Expect most activity at Butch Lake around the seam between weed and open water. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Biting air and slow fish: small baits, long pauses.

Butch Lake sits in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, out in Alaska. The surface lies 1,808 feet up. Roughly 43 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. On size it sits at the modest end of our Southeast Fairbanks Census Area list. Deltana at 13 miles is the nearest place to stop. Beyond it, Salcha at 61 miles and Eielson Air Force Base at 71 miles. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. County-wide records name Arctic grayling, lake whitefish and lake trout. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Butch Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 57°F, while January sits near -3°F. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. After mid May the shallows warm and the fish move up. The season between ice runs from about mid May to mid October. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. It sets the rhythm of the year at Butch Lake.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Doc Lake at 6 miles is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Butch Lake before loading the car.
