Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with barely a breath of wind with the glass slipping lower. Whatever swims in Payne Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Payne Lake is one of the Hale County waters in Alabama. The country here is pine and hardwood. Roughly 111 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The whole outline is near 2.4 miles, and most of it is walkable. Size puts it in the front rank of our Hale County list. Moundville lies 13 miles from the water. Greensboro is 15 miles away, with Brent at 16 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Documented catches and surveys in the area cover warmouth, black madtom, blackbanded darter and bluegill. The records cover the area rather than this water alone. The shape of Payne Lake decides where the fish sit.
July runs about 80°F on average, January about 43°F. Long warm spells define the calendar more than any cold. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer squeezes it into the edges of the day. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. Time your trip to Payne Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. You can camp about half a mile away, going by the mapping. Bluegill and other panfish take small jigs or worms under a float near any cover. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. If the gate is shut, Joe Glover Lake at 5.7 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the position at Payne Lake before loading the car.
