Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with mild air moving in from the NNW and a rising glass. Most of the action on Lake L U should come off shallow cover and weed edges. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Out in Sumter County, Alabama, sits Lake L U. It sits at 154 feet above sea level. The water covers some 43 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The edge runs 1.4 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Few waters listed in Sumter County are bigger. The closest town, Livingston, is 1.4 miles away. York is 10 miles and Demopolis 22 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. Public wildlife records from this area list green sunfish, dollar sunfish, bluegill, black bullhead and gulf longear sunfish. Treat it as evidence of what swims in the area. On Lake L U the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Between January at about 44°F and July at about 81°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Long warm spells define the calendar more than any cold. Heat pushes fish deep from June onwards, so start early. Late winter often fishes better here than midsummer does. Lake L U runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
The access position is unclear from public sources. There is a car park half a mile from the bank. For the catfish, fish bottom baits into the deeper holes and let them sit. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Ennis Tartt Pond is 1.3 miles distant. Ask locally about Lake L U if anything is unclear.
