An even grey lid over the water, with a mirror surface most of the day and pressure going nowhere. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Loch Heron. Plan around the stretch from night into morning. Keep moving until you find them. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

You will find Loch Heron in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The bank is 335 feet above sea level. With some 35 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 0.9 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Our Dumfries and Galloway list holds plenty of bigger water. Newton Stewart lies 8.6 miles from the water. Cairnryan follows at 13 miles, then Stranraer at 13 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Dumfries and Galloway include European eel, brown trout and Atlantic salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Loch Heron the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Temperature averages peak at 14°C in July and bottom out at 3°C in February. Mild ends to the year keep the season long. It is not guaranteed even in a cold spell, so check yourself. Late winter often fishes better here than midsummer does. Anyone fishing Loch Heron regularly works to that calendar.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No built facilities appear in mapping around this water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Loch Ochiltree at 6.3 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the current arrangement for Loch Heron.
