Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with air barely moving and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Crane Loch should hold close to the shaded margin through bright spells. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Stay mobile and follow the activity. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Crane Loch is a South Lanarkshire water, in Scotland. Around the bank it is rolling hill. The whole thing is a single swim; walk it in a minute. You are 5.3 miles from Carnwath. Edinburgh sits 19 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing. It holds up in poor weather better than open water does.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name brown trout, European eel, Atlantic salmon, European grayling and perch. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. On Crane Loch the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
In an average year July sits at 14°C and January at 2°C. Seasons here are moderate, and the fishing runs most of the year. In milder years the edges alone go, and the middle never sets. November and March are the quiet, comfortable months to be out. On Crane Loch that shapes the whole year.
We hold no note on access for this one. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Crosswood Reservoir, 3.4 miles out. For Crane Loch in particular, ask before you travel.
