Showers crossing the water today, with almost no wind to speak of with a settled glass. Activity on Balgavies Loch should centre on the first drop-off and weed lines. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Balgavies Loch is an Angus water, in Scotland. The surroundings are rolling hill. Roughly 44 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The edge runs 1.1 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. The closest town, Letham, is 1.5 miles away. The big place round here is Dundee, 15 miles distant. No area boundary comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Angus cover brown trout, Atlantic salmon and European eel. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. At Balgavies Loch the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
The year swings from about 2°C in January to roughly 14°C in July. The season stretches long at both ends here. In milder years the edges alone go, and the middle never sets. June to September is hot work, so the first and last hours are what count. On Balgavies Loch the same rules apply, with local timing.
Access is not recorded for this water. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A parking area is marked roughly half a mile out. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Rescobie Loch is 1.3 miles off. None of that is settled for Balgavies Loch in what we hold.
