Flat light and a covered sky today, with hardly a ripple anywhere with a settled glass. The fish at Wolf Lake are likely to sit near the calm side of the wind. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

The Southeast Fairbanks Census Area end of Alaska holds Wolf Lake. It stands 2,890 feet above sea level. At some 527 acres it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. With 7.1 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Compared with other Alaska water on our list, it sits high. Nearest place of any size is Tok, 133 miles away. Beyond it, Dawson City at 147 miles and Whitehorse at 186 miles. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Survey and observation records for Southeast Fairbanks Census Area include Arctic grayling, lake whitefish and lake trout. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The shape of Wolf Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
In an average year July sits at 54°F and January at -10°F. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid May. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid May in spring and again near mid October in autumn. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Wolf Lake around it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Records show it does not hold water year-round. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Pickhandle Lake, 8.9 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Wolf Lake for certain.
