Low mist over the surface today, with a kind SE breeze on the water and pressure sitting still. The fish at Quamie Lake are likely to sit near reed fringes and open pockets. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

You will find Quamie Lake in Haines Junction, Yukon. It stands 1,512 metres above sea level. At some 1.13 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. The outline measures near 7.2 km, so local knowledge counts. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Yukon listings. For supplies, Whitehorse is 102 km out. After that come Skagway at 190 km and Haines at 210 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Haines Junction cover Arctic grayling, northern pike and lake trout. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Anyone new to Quamie Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Expect July to average close to 10°C, with January the cold end at about -18°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Winter locks it down, and late May brings it back. Averages suggest open water from about late May through to roughly mid October. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Expect Quamie Lake to follow that timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Moraine Lake at 6.5 km is the nearest alternative. For Quamie Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
