An even grey lid over the water, with a whisper of wind from the SE and the barometer holding steady. Expect most activity at Cub Lake around any hard bottom among the soft. If you pick one session, make it the morning. Let the water tell you when to move. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Look for Cub Lake in the Whitehorse part of Yukon. The bank is 914 metres above sea level. About 3 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Our Whitehorse list holds plenty of bigger water. Whitehorse at 22 km is the nearest place to stop. The big place round here is Anchorage, 779 km distant. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Whitehorse include Chinook salmon, Arctic grayling, round whitefish and longnose sucker. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Cub Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Climate normals give 13°C for July and -18°C for January. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. After mid May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice usually gives way near mid May, and forms again about late October. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. On Cub Lake that shapes the whole year.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Scout Lake, 1.6 km away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Cub Lake is worth confirming on the day.
