Lac Walling is one of the Outaouais waters in Quebec. The land about it is rolling bush. At about 17 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The bank runs about 2.4 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Fort-Coulonge is the closest place, 38 km off. Gatineau sits 118 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. This one is safely inside the county line.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Outaouais include pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Lac Walling the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
The range across the year is -14°C to 18°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about late November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. The season on Lac Walling follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Lac de l'Ennui at 2.1 km is the nearest alternative. Treat Lac Walling as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
