Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a faint SW drift with a settled glass. Lac Veto should fish best around structure within a cast of the bank today. Little to get excited about, though the evening holds a sliver of promise. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Set in Nord-du-Québec, Quebec, this is Lac Veto. What surrounds it is taiga. Roughly 55 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. With about 3.7 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. You are 32 km from Waswanipi. Saguenay is the closest city, 394 km away. Neighbouring water: Lac Branssat at 9 km, Lac Colette within 11 km, Lac Huguette at 11 km, Lac Inconnu within 16 km and Lac Capisisit at 17 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Take Lac Veto a stretch at a time.
Between January at about -19°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Lac Veto runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Lac Branssat at 9 km is the sensible second choice. Ask locally about Lac Veto if anything is unclear.
