An even grey lid over the water, with flat calm through the day with the barometer flat. Start the search at Lac Tar along inflow corners and shaded margins. Save your energy for the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac Tar lies within the bounds of Mauricie, Quebec. Height above sea level is 513 metres. This is a tiny water, and one quiet approach covers all of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Mauricie list. Leblanc lies 24 km from the water. Weymontachie lies 38 km off, Manawan another 110 km. Within easy reach: Lac Gumdrop out at 0.7 km, Lac Annette 0.7 km, Lac Mildred out at 1.9 km, Lac Jacques 2 km and Lac Eagle out at 2.6 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Fish documented in Mauricie include northern pike, brook trout and walleye. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Lac Tar the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Expect July to average close to 16°C, with January the cold end at about -17°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. The season on Lac Tar follows the weather closely.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Lac Gumdrop at 0.7 km is the sensible second choice. Treat Lac Tar as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
