Lac Tang in Abitibi-Témiscamingue: How and When to Fish It

• Overview

  Lac Tang lies in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, in Quebec. The surface lies 336 metres up. At about 21 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. There is roughly 2.2 km of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. Start from Mattawa, 35 km down the road. Deep River lies 67 km off, Notre-Dame-du-Lac another 72 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.

• Where to Fish on Lac Tang

  We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Fish documented in Abitibi-Témiscamingue include northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. • Seasonal Patterns

  Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -14°C in January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at late November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. That is the shape of the year on Lac Tang.

• Tackle & Baits
