A wet system passing over today, with the surface near flat with a settled glass. Most of the action on Lac Surprise should come off the seam between weed and open water. The strongest window is the night. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac Surprise stands in Laurentides, Quebec. Elevation runs to 272 metres. It runs to roughly 22 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Bank access stretches around 3.4 km in total. Labelle lies 6.7 km from the water. Beyond it, Rivière-Rouge at 12 km and La Minerve at 18 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Reported across Laurentides: pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and brook trout. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Lac Surprise the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Seasonal averages run from -14°C in January up to 18°C in July. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around late April. The water is typically free of ice between late April and late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. The season on Lac Surprise rarely departs from it.
No public source sets out the position on this bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Lac Inattendu, 1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Lac Surprise are worth checking on the day.
