Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a kind ESE breeze on the water with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Lac Sonolet around the shaded margin through bright spells. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Lac Sonolet belongs to Nord-du-Québec, Quebec. What surrounds it is northern bush. At some 3.84 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. There is roughly 16 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Supplies mean a trip to Kuujjuaq, 343 km off. Then Labrador City, 373 km, and Fermont, 378 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout and lake trout. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Lac Sonolet the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 13°C in July and bottoms out near -25°C in January. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late May. The season between ice runs from about late May to late October. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Sonolet.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Lac Tramont at 3.9 km is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Lac Sonolet in what we hold.
