Soft grey light all day today, with a whisper of wind from the SSW with the glass holding level. Lac Shain should fish best around the shaded margin through bright spells today. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Lac Shain is an Abitibi-Témiscamingue water, Quebec side. Land around it is spruce and muskeg. It runs to roughly 15 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Roughly 2.6 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. For supplies, Ferme-Neuve is 101 km out. After that come Saint-Boniface at 113 km and Mont-Laurier at 115 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Reported across Abitibi-Témiscamingue: northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Take Lac Shain a stretch at a time.
Temperature averages peak at 17°C in July and bottom out at -17°C in January. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Expect Lac Shain to follow that timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Lac Purdy, 1.1 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Shain for certain.
