Overcast skies today, with mild air moving in from the SSW and the barometer holding steady. Most of the action on Lac Saunders should come off windblown banks where food collects. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Lac Saunders is a Nord-du-Québec water, Quebec side. The surface lies 351 metres up. This is big water, about 14.80 sq km, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. The perimeter is close to 39 km, and wind can be flat in one arm and rough in the next. It ranks high for size among our Nord-du-Québec listings. For a base, Chisasibi sits 316 km out. Further out sit Sanikiluaq (368 km) and Waskaganish (467 km). Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Public occurrence data for Nord-du-Québec names Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Anyone new to Lac Saunders should walk it once before setting up.
Seasonal averages run from -23°C in January up to 14°C in July. The ice season is long here and the open one short. Once it clears, about late May, the fishing comes on quickly. From about late May to around early November, expect open water on the long-run figures. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Expect Lac Saunders to follow that timing.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. If the gate is shut, Lac Ayawiskamichisuhiwach at 6.9 km is the nearest alternative. Confirm before you fish Lac Saunders.
