An even grey lid over the water, with light air out of the SW and the barometer holding steady. On Lac Salsifis, work windblown banks where food collects first. If you must go, go in the morning. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Quebec holds Lac Salsifis, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. The setting is rolling bush on every side. With some 12 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. About 2.3 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Deep River lies 104 km from the water. Gatineau is the closest city, 211 km away. This one is safely inside the county line.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Public occurrence data for Abitibi-Témiscamingue names northern pike, yellow perch, walleye and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Lac Salsifis the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July runs about 17°C on average, January about -16°C. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near late November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Plan any trip to Lac Salsifis around it.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Fajolles, 1.8 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to Lac Salsifis locally before you travel.
