A grey, even sky over the water, with a soft N wind and pressure going nowhere. Start the search at Lac Saint-Gervais along the shallows early and the drop later. Block out the hours from the day. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Set in Nord-du-Québec, Lac Saint-Gervais is a Quebec water. Land around it is northern bush. Around 89 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Roughly 4.7 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Start from Salluit, 295 km down the road. Kuujjuaq lies 320 km off, Puvirnituq another 339 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Lac Saint-Gervais gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect July near 11°C and January near -24°C on the long-run figures. Winter runs most of the calendar, and everything worth doing happens in the gap. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid June. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid June and starts locking again about mid October. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. The season on Lac Saint-Gervais follows the weather closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Lac Kuugaup sits 20 km off and takes the overflow. The position on Lac Saint-Gervais is worth confirming on the day.
