Soft grey light all day today, with air barely moving and no real change in pressure. The productive water at Lac Roger will be around the calm side of the wind. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Lac Roger falls in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, part of Quebec. It lies 676 metres above sea level. The water covers some 14 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The whole outline is near 1.9 km, and most of it is walkable. It is high ground by Quebec standards. The nearest place of any size is Saint-Fulgence, 36 km away. Further out sit Saint-Honoré (40 km) and La Baie (46 km). Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean records list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish among the fish reported. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. At Lac Roger the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Averages here run 15°C at the top of summer and -19°C at the bottom of winter. This far north the hard season runs and runs. After mid May the shallows warm and the fish move up. The season between ice runs from about mid May to early November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Roger.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Failing this one, try Lac Monette, 1 km away. Signs at Lac Roger carry more weight than any list.
