Overcast skies today, with stillness over the whole water with a settled glass. On Lac Richard, work the shaded margin through bright spells first. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Lac Richard falls in Nord-du-Québec, part of Quebec. What surrounds it is taiga. At about 15 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. About 1.6 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. It is a small entry by Nord-du-Québec standards. Nearest place of any size is Matagami, 94 km away. Beyond it, La Sarre at 128 km and Macamic at 132 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Public occurrence data for Nord-du-Québec names Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Lac Richard gives up more to patience than to distance.
Between January at about -19°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The freeze holds for the better part of the year. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. On Lac Richard the same rules apply, with local timing.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Serge, 5.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Confirm access to Lac Richard locally before you travel.
