Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with just enough S wind to ripple the surface with the barometer flat. Give the shaded margin through bright spells the first hour at Lac Rene. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the evening. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Lac Rene is one of the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean waters in Quebec. It lies 531 metres above sea level. Compared with other Quebec water on our list, it sits high. Labrecque sits 69 km from here and is the nearest stop. Saguenay sits 90 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. If this one is busy: 0.8 km out stands Lac Line, Lac Bertrand 0.9 km away, 1.1 km out stands Lac Laval, Lac Renardeau 1.5 km away and 1.6 km out stands Lac David. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean cover northern pike, Atlantic salmon and lake whitefish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Lac Rene the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
The warmest month averages 16°C, the coldest about -19°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Lac Rene fishes to that pattern most years.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. For a change of water, Lac Line is 0.8 km distant. Nothing on Lac Rene should be assumed from this page alone.
